Burning of Palms

Palm fronds or woven crosses from past years’ Palm Sundays will be burned. The ashes will be prepared and then be used for the “Imposition of Ashes,” when the sign of the cross is made on a person’s forehead during the Ash Wednesday services.

Shrove Sunday

Parish Hall 330 E. 16th Street, Upland, CA, United States

Instead of celebrating Shrove Tuesday in the evening, we are celebrating on Sunday, February 19, after the 10 AM service, in the Parish Hall, during hospitality/coffee hour time. In addition to the standard refreshments, we will have pancakes with a choice of butter, fruit, and syrup. There is a sign-up sheet for donations. Shrove Sunday/Tuesday, the time before Ash Wednesday (aka Mardi Gras), is when the fats and sweets were consumed before the observance of the yearly fast.

Ash and Dash

Upland’s 16th Street commuters will be offered ashes from 6 to 10 AM in our north parking lot on Ash Wednesday. Lay members of St. Mark’s assist in the “imposition of ashes”—that is, making the sign of the cross in ashes on a person’s forehead.

Ash Wednesday Service

Sanctuary 330 E. 16th Street, Upland, CA, United States

We begin the 40-day season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. Ashes signify our mortality and penitence. We will offer two services in the Sanctuary  for the “imposition of ashes.”
