Dear Haiti Friends,
Courtesy of Prof. April Mayes, down below you’ll find information about a “Town Hall” zoom meeting about countering anti-Haitian rhetoric and protecting Haitian immigrants and refugees.  I know we all have friends who certainly were affected by cruel remarks directed toward them and turned into “funny” (not at all) memes, and who will possibly be affected by increases in deportations of non-citizens and cancellation of Temporary Protected Status programs.  We’re all called to stand with our Haitian brothers and sisters.

Town Hall: Organizing Against Anti-Haitianism After the US Election

As anti-Haitianism surges in the lead-up to the U.S. presidential election, confronting the rise in xenophobia and hate requires the community to be prepared and organized.

Date & Time: Tuesday, November 12, 7-8:30 p.m. EST (ZOOM)

Co-sponsoring organizations: Haitian Studies AssociationNorth American Congress on Latin AmericaFaith in ActionNYU School of Law’s Global Justice ClinicHaitian Bridge AllianceInstitute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti, and Quixote Center.

The U.S. presidential election has revived and deployed the most vitriolic anti-Haitian rhetoric and even violence as a turnout strategy. What can Haitian people and their allies/accomplices do to stem the anti-Haitian rhetoric, policy, and violence? It is possible–even likely–that the U.S. presidential election results will not be known for a while. Whatever the outcome, the Haitian community must remain vigilant and prepared. This Town Hall will allow us to unite our strengths and plan future actions and organizing efforts. After the panelists deliver brief presentations, each will facilitate small group discussions to generate solutions and identify resources and strategies. Participants will populate and edit Google Docs, which all registrants will receive. This Town Hall hopes to encourage ongoing activism and engagement for the long haul.
