Below my signature is a lovely New Year’s letter from the Rev. Pere Jean Alphonse to his partners in the area around Mirebalais. I try to imagine how busy our friends are just trying to get through these difficult times, and I am inspired that Pere Alphonse took the time to reflect and be thankful.

Our occupation of Haiti from 1915-1934 ostensibly to “restore order” but primarily to protect and further U.S. economic interests is a rarely-mentioned incident from our past that deserves our attention.

Avant même mon arrivée à Mirebalais, vous étiez déjà à l’œuvre : construire des écoles, assurer l’écolage des enfants, semer l’espérance là où l’avenir semblait incertain. Et depuis mes dix années de ministère dans cette région bénie, vous êtes restés présents, fidèles, constants dans votre engagement.
Je garde au plus profond de mon cœur cette mission d’éducation, particulièrement envers les enfants des zones montagneuses et vulnérables, notamment dans ma ville natale. Grâce à vous, cette œuvre continue de porter du fruit, avec foi, espérance et amour.
Le chemin fut parfois ardu, mais la grâce de Dieu, la foi qui nous unit et votre générosité ont rendu possible ce qui semblait impossible. Vous avez été des instruments de lumière pour tant d’enfants. Leur avenir vous doit déjà beaucoup.
Chaque pas accompli témoigne de la fidélité de Dieu à travers votre soutien. Et grâce à vous, cette mission grandit encore.
Puisse cette nouvelle annèe 2026 renouveler en nous tous l’engagement pour l’education, la solidarite et la foi.Marchons ensemble,guidès par l’esperance.

Even before my arrival in Mirebalais, you were already at work: building schools, ensuring children received an education, sowing hope where the future seemed uncertain. And throughout my ten years of ministry in this blessed region, you have remained present, faithful, and constant in your commitment.
I hold deep in my heart this mission of education, particularly for the children of the mountainous and vulnerable areas, especially in my hometown. Thanks to you, this work continues to bear fruit, with faith, hope, and love.
The path was sometimes arduous, but God’s grace, the faith that unites us, and your generosity have made possible what seemed impossible. You have been instruments of light for so many children. Their future already owes you so much.
Every step taken testifies to God’s faithfulness through your support. And thanks to you, this mission continues to grow. May this new year 2026 renew in all of us the commitment to education, solidarity, and faith. Let us walk together, guided by hope.
